Android Table for Development - Asus Eee Pad Transformer

For those of you looking for Android devices both for work, play and development, I strongly recommend the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. I ordered mine from Amazon.com a couple days ago and it arrived within a couple of days.

My criteria for buying an Android device is simple. It must be:

1. Relatively cheap

2. Relatively lightweight

3. Running the latest Android OS, or at least easily upgradeable to the latest

4. Been positively reviewed by others

I was agonizing over the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I was leaning towards the Galaxy Tab, but the price was one factor that pulled me back. In the end, the Eee Pad Transformer's price (US$379 for the 16GB edition) and Asus's good reputation for updating the device to the latest OS (it came with Android 3.1 out of the box, but while I was charging it for first use it automatically downloaded Android 3.2.1 and updated it before the battery was 30% full) made me decide to get the Eee Pad Transformer. I am playing with it now, but so far I am a happy user. I am looking forward to updating it to Ice Cream Sandwich when it is available.

For those of you still deciding, it is good to get it now before the Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotion ends. Hit on the link above and you should be able to get a better deal than I do.

iOS 5 GM Seed now available for download

Apple has released the GM Seed of the iOS 5.0 SDK. This signifies the final version that developers can use to test their apps for the eventual release of iOS on the 12 Oct 2011.

Developers can download the latest version from http://developer.apple.com/. Note that the GM Seed for your device cannot be download over-the-air from your device. You need to download it and manually update your device.

Displaying Status Bar Notifications in Android

Developers of Android are no doubt familiar with the Toast class, which displays a little pop-up containing whatever message you want to display to the user.

However, the Toast pop-up will automatically dismiss itself after a while, making it useful as a tool to provide timely feedback to the user (such as informing the user that a file has been saved successfully), but not a really good tool to use for some asynchronous action (such as telling the user that an incoming SMS message has arrived). For the latter, you can make use of the Status Bar Notification feature of Android, which displays a persistent notification on the status bar of your Android device. This notification can be dismissed when the user has read it, and thus this makes it a good tool for delivering notifications to the users to respond at their convenience.

In this article, I shall walk you through the steps to creating status bar notifications for your Android application.

Here is another Android App developed by one of my course participants at the Fort Gordon's first Android class. Awesome!

CacheNav is a GPS application that will track your current location as well as plot a point in one of five different coordinate formats (Degrees/Minutes/Seconds, Degrees/Decimal Minutes, Decimal Degrees, UTM, and MGRS). Once you have plotted a point, the distance to your plotted destination is displayed (in meters) at the bottom of the screen. In addition, there are also two map views: Satellite View and Street View.

If you are low on space, this app also has the ability to be stored on an SD Card.

Using your Borders Gift Card (Singapore) to offset against my courses

Recently, it was reported in the Singapore papers that due to the closure of Borders at Wheelock place, customers could no longer use its previously issued gift cards to make purchases at other branches. While this is a very disappointing news to a lot of customers, I have decided to follow the spirit of German Airline Lufthansa, who has very generously offered to let customers offset their air tickets value using their existing gift card.

As a book lover myself, I visit book stores regularly, especially Borders. I had been going there since I was a student, and had many fond memories. The smell and feel of books, and the aroma of coffee that fills the store has become a part of many peoples' lives.

Army moves to create mobile apps in pilot course

An increase in the commercial use of Smartphone technologies is rapidly finding its way into the military. For the past two years, the U. S. Army Training and Doctrine Command has pursued a concept exploration pilot program called Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications. In the consumer market, the proliferation of phones and accessibility for developers to write and distribute powerful apps has created an environment that has challenged traditional software acquisition strategies. The reduced requirements for developers have empowered scores of programmers to learn to write apps.

The Army, through CSDA, is working toward creating mechanisms that will allow organizations to write their own apps for distribution through a future Army Marketplace. Part of the CSDA process is teaching government civilians and members of active duty and reserves the foundations of writing mobile apps. The U. S. Army Signal Center of Excellence established a Mobile Applications Branch at Fort Gordon, Ga., with a task to develop apps and host training opportunities for app development.

From 8-19 August, Fort Gordon hosted an Android class in Cobb Hall, which consisted of 38 students from TRADOC, quite a few came from other organizations within the Army and other services, who wrote their first Android apps within the course.

Android Article - Preserving User Preferences in Android Applications

Often you need to store personalized information for each user of your application. For example, your application may require users to logon to a secure server for authentication. In this case, the user needs to supply his credentials, such as a login name and a password. The first time the user uses your application this information will be entered by the user, but subsequently it would be useful for your application to “remember” this information somewhere so that it can save the user the trouble of entering the same information every time he uses your application. To save this information, there are a couple of ways you could use – files, databases, etc. However, a much better way would be to use the SharedPreferences feature in Android. In this article, I will walk you through the steps to creating an Android application that makes use of this SharedPreferences feature.

Very often in Objective-C, you have an array that contains a number of objects, like this:

NSMutableArray *array = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init];

[array addObject:@"Item 1"];

[array addObject:@"Item 2"];

[array addObject:@"Item 3"];

And often, you need to retrieve an object from the array and then assign it to another object, like this:

NSString *item = [array objectAtIndex:1];

However, the statement above is not safe as the object can be removed any time, like this:

NSString *item = [array objectAtIndex:1];

[array removeObjectAtIndex:1];

In this case, the item is no longer pointing to a valid memory location. You should instead use a retain on the object that is assigned to the object from the array:

NSString *item = [[array objectAtIndex:1] retain];

[array removeObjectAtIndex:1];

Doing so will ensure that even if the object in the array is removed, the object pointing to it will still remain valid.

In short, remember to retain item(s) retrieved from an array.

iOS Bluetooth Programming - Getting devices to see each other

Sometime back, I wrote an article for DevX.com on how to write Bluetooth iPhone applications. In that article, iOS devices running that program will be able to see each other when you use the GKPeerPickerController class to look for each other. So why is it that your application can only see another device running the same application, and not other Bluetooth applications running on the same device?

The reason is simple. When you use the GKPeerPickerController class to look for other Bluetooth devices, it creates a session ID. Applications will only be able to see each other if the session IDs are identical. By default, the session ID is the application's Bundle Identifier (you can see this in the Info.plist file in your Xcode project. Hence, if an application is installed on two devices, one should be able to see the other since they have the same Bundle Identifier. By default, the bundle identifier is set to: com.yourcompany.${PRODUCT_NAME:rfc1034identifier}. So if two applications have different Product Name they won't be able to see each other.

But what if you want to customize the session ID by creating your own? To do so, you just need to implement the following method:

In this case, devices can only see each other if their session ID are the same. The displayName argument allows you to specify the name of the device that will be seen by the other party. If you set it to nil, iOS will use the device's name.

How to change the Base SDK of your iOS Project

In the past, when you create your iOS project, Xcode will always hardcode the version number of the SDK in your project.

If you open the project using a newer version of the SDK, you will get the Base SDK Missing error:

To resolve this, simply double-click on the project name (in this example, BasicUI) to open the Info window. In the Info window, select the General tab:

At the bottom of the Info window, select the drop down for Base SDK for All Configurations and select Latest iOS (iOS 4.3). Once this is selected, close the Info window.

Back in Xcode, you should see the SDK number that was selected earlier:

If you don’t see this, close the project and reopen it again. This time, the updated version number should appear.

Android - How to intercept SMS messages and prevent them from appearing in the Messaging App?

Sometime back, I wrote an article on how to intercept incoming SMS messages in your Android application - http://mobiforge.com/developing/story/sms-messaging-android.

Ever since, I have received numerous questions on how you can prevent the incoming messages (that you are trying to intercept) from appearing in the Messaging application (and hence in the status bar). The solution to this is pretty straight-forward once you understand the concept of broadcast receivers.

Basically, your program registers a class SMSReceiver as a broadcast receiver to intercept incoming SMS messages:

       <receiver android:name=".SMSReceiver">
         <intent-filter>
             <action android:name="android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED" />                  
         </intent-filter>
     </receiver>

When a SMS message is received, all applications (including the Messaging application) will take turn to handle the incoming message. So, in order to prevent the incoming message from being handled by the Messaging application, your application just needs to handle the message before the Messaging app has the chance to do so. To do this, add the android:priority attribute to the <intent-filter> element, like this:

        <receiver android:name=".SMSReceiver">
         <intent-filter android:priority="100">
             <action android:name="android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED" />                  
         </intent-filter>
     </receiver>

Set this to a high number, such as 100. The higher the number, the earlier Android executes your application. So in this case, when an incoming message is received, your application will execute first, and you can decide what to do with the message. To prevent other applications from seeing the message, simply call the abortBroadcast() method in your broadcast receiver class (SMSReceiver):

        this.abortBroadcast();

Once you do this, no other applications will see your SMS message. :-) Have fun!

How the Nokia and Microsoft collaboration will affect mobile developers

By now, you should have heard of the announcement of Nokia's collaboration with Microsoft to put their Windows Phone OS onto their devices. The following are some of my thoughts on how this collaboration will affect mobile developers.

This is definitely a win for Microsoft. Having a partner strong in hardware is definitely going to drive up the reachability of the platform. And Nokia has always been good in their hardware, hence Microsoft will get a lot of additional exposure, apart from the usual hardware partners like Samsung, HTC, LG, and others.

I am not sure if Nokia will win in the long run. In the short term, this may drive up the sales for it's hardware, but Nokia's pace will likely be dictated by the timeline of the Windows Phone OS. Whatever hardware innovations they have will be subjected to the support of the OS. We do not know the detailed arrangements, but I doubt Microsoft will customize the OS too much to suit each device manufacturer's request as other device manufacturers will also want the same treatment. Also, by this collaboration Nokia is directly jumping into the boxing ring together with the other devices manufacturers, and will now face the other very stiff competitors such as HTC, Samsung, LG, etc, who already have a head start in supporting the Windows Phone OS.

I think the overall success factor affecting Microsoft (and Nokia and other device manufacturers) is their ability to build a successful ecosystem. Having a good ecosystem will get people to buy your devices, and when people buy your devices, developers will come. This is very much a chicken-and-egg problem - there are no users if there are no apps, and if there are no users, there are no apps.

Personally, I would think that Nokia is buying time to get their MeeGo OS ready. This is very much like the early day of Steve Jobs' return to Apple, where he collaborated with Microsoft by bundling Internet Explorer with the Mac OS. In return, Microsoft agreed to invest in Apple and committed to continue writing apps for the platform.

Obviously, if you are a Symbian developer, this is really bad news. I don't think there is much you can do now, except to learn a new platform as soon as you can. The good news is that the Windows Phone platform is very easy to pick up. Experienced C++ and Java developers should have no problem in learning the .NET Compact Framework, which supports languages such as VB.NET and C#.

If you are a Windows Phone developer, this news could not be better - you now have a wider customer base to reach out for. If you have been hesitating to get onto this platform, there is no better time than now.

If you are an Android developer, there is little impact for you, as Android devices are already flooding the market today. And there is no certainty that Nokia might not look to Google for another partnership. Look at Motorola, their devices run on all sorts of platforms, such as Windows Mobile, Android, etc. Moreover, 2011 is the year of tablets, with the Motorola Xoom stealing the limelight at this moment.

What about iPhone developers? This is not going to change your world as you have enough devices to keep yourself busy for a while - iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. And oh yes, the new iPad 2 will make things even more exciting, not to mention the up-and-coming iPhone 5.

In short, this year is going to be a very exciting time for mobile developers, only if you choose the right platforms to hedge your bets. For me, I am putting all my money on Windows Phone, Android, and iOS.

New Course - Fundamentals of Programming using C#

As iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone take the mobile world by storm, there is an increasing need for people to write mobile apps. Due to the increase demand in the industry, I will be launching a new course this coming December - Fundamentals of Programming using the C# Programming Language.

This upcoming course is for people who are new to programming, for those who wanted a headstart to programming mobile apps. As these three mobile platforms use different languages, therefore it is always a challenge to have a course that caters to all people.

However, I believe the C# language is a nice and easy language to get started and provide a good vehicle to learn about programming, in particular about object-oriented (OO) programming . And hence this upcoming course will use C# as the language of choice to start your programming journey. Participants will learn about basic programming concepts and then more importantly OO programming. Here are the course details:
