New Course - Fundamentals of Programming using C#

As iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone take the mobile world by storm, there is an increasing need for people to write mobile apps. Due to the increase demand in the industry, I will be launching a new course this coming December - Fundamentals of Programming using the C# Programming Language.

This upcoming course is for people who are new to programming, for those who wanted a headstart to programming mobile apps. As these three mobile platforms use different languages, therefore it is always a challenge to have a course that caters to all people.

However, I believe the C# language is a nice and easy language to get started and provide a good vehicle to learn about programming, in particular about object-oriented (OO) programming . And hence this upcoming course will use C# as the language of choice to start your programming journey. Participants will learn about basic programming concepts and then more importantly OO programming. Here are the course details:

Fundamentals of Programming using the C# Programming Language
Date: 2-3 Dec 2010
Fee: S$997

Introduction to Windows Phone 7 Development

By now, you should already have heard of Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 mobile OS. And while many developers are busy developing for Android and iPhone, Microsoft is hard at work, developing its killer mobile OS that could give the competitors a run for the money. Before you dismiss Microsoft as a serious contender in the mobile space, think again. The new OS is now a total rewrite of the older Windows Mobile platform, and sports many features that you have come to expect of a modern mobile operating system.

In this series of Windows Phone 7 articles on mobiForge, I will bring you on a development journey to explore the full capabilities of the new operating system. And in this first installment, we will explore the tools and see how you could start writing your first application quickly.

Apps published by participants of my iPhone courses

One of the greatest rewards of doing training is when you see the participants of your courses putting into use the skills you shared with them. One such participant is Ian Wen, who attended my Foundation of iPhone course earlier this year. He was recently featured in The Sunday Times (17th Oct 2010) for his work on creating a number of apps for the iPhone.

Restructuring of the iPhone Courses starting from November 2010

Based on the various feedbacks from the industry as well as the experiences gained from running my iPhone courses for the past 1.5 years, I will be restructuring my series of iPhone courses to meet the needs of the industry. These are the changes, which in my opinion, will better prepare a developer to tackle the ever changing challenges of being an iOS developer. Over the next couple of days, I will be releasing the detailed list of topics. But for now, here are the new courses lined up for November:

1. Foundation of iPhone Programming (2 days). There will be no changes to this popular course. Aspiring iPhone/iPad developers should take this course to get a jump-start on iOS programming. As most of the topics center around iPhone, the course title still uses the iPhone name to better reflect the focus of the course. iPad developers who do not have any experience with Xcode and Objective C should get started with this course first.
Date: 22-23 Nov 2010

2. Programming iPhone User Interfaces (1 day). This is a new course that tackles the more tricky issues of iPhone UI Programming. It goes beyond the basic view controllers that participants learn in the foundation course. This course is designed to give developers a more detailed understanding of the various ways to build iPhone UIs by combining the various view controllers.
Date: 24 Nov 2010

3. Advanced iOS Programming (2 days). This is an advanced course that covers topics that relates to location-based services and network programming. The previous two courses - iPhone LBS Programming and iPhone Network Programming, are now subsumed into this course. Besides, LBS and network programming, this course will also include advanced topics such as local notifications, security, developing Universal applications (for iPad and iPhone), and more. In summary, this course will offer you the knowledge to develop truly compelling apps!
Date: 25-26 Nov 2010

I hope this will give you a better idea of the series of iPhone course as well as provide you with a smoother journey to iPhone stardom!

Please note that all courses are in Singapore.

My C# book translated into Chinese and Polish

Up to date, I have realized that my C# 2008 Programmer's Reference book was translated into two other languages - Simplified Chinese and Polish. While I certainly do not understand Polish, it is always a great feeling to know that your book is published in different languages!

If you know of other languages that it has been translated into, send me a picture of the book! Thanks!

Android phones recommendation

A number of my course participants asked me which are some of the best Android phones out there in the market. So, here are some of my recommendations:

If you have no budget constraint (who doesn't!!!), then the Samsung Galaxy S is a very good choice. It looks like the iPhone, but what really blows my mind off is the speed of this phone. Try it for yourself and you will know what I mean.

Another good phone to get is the HTC Desire. As the name implies, it is the phone that a lot of developers desire! HTC is well known for making cool phones, and the Desire does not disappoint.

If you are budget constrained (like me), you will find the HTC Wildfire a very good alternative to the two phones mentioned above. I got mine for S$460 at Sim Lim Square, and although it has a lower resolution screen and a slower processor, it is a very good phone to buy for development. I have been playing with it for a couple of days, and it works with Eclipse and hence makes deploying your application from within Eclipse a seamless experience.

Dashcode Course - 31 Aug - 1 Sep 2010

The Dashcode course has been confirmed to run on the 31 Aug to 1 Sep 2010. If you want to develop apps for the iPhone but are not ready to learn Objective-C now, this is a good way to get started! Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you will learn how to write web-based apps for your iPhone. You will learn how to write offline apps, as well as location-based iPhone Web apps.

For quick registration, email me at weimenglee@learn2develop.net, or download the brochure and application form here.

Updated Course Schedules in Sep 2010

SMS Bubble UI in iPhone Apps

Users of iPhone are no stranger to the built-in SMS application that displays your messages using cute little bubbles. However, this innovative UI feature is not exposed to the iPhone developers - you have to create it yourself if you want to have the same look-and-feel of the SMS application. Creating this UI - which I will call the Bubble UI, allow you to represent information in a conversational style. A good application of this is when you are creating a chat application. Messages exchanged between two persons can be shown in message bubbles.

In this article, I will walk you through the steps to create an UI that is similar to the SMS application.

Course location

Over the past few weeks, I have received quite a number of emails asking the location for my training. At this moment, all courses are conducted in Singapore. If you want to attend the courses, you have to be physically in Singapore.

Over the years, I have explored the possibilities to conduct webinars, or some sort of online trainings. Unfortunately, I am still of the belief that nothing beats attending the course in person and having an instructor looking over your shoulder and answering any questions or doubts that you may have. Of course, the downside to this is that the courses would only then be available to those living in the region, or to those who are willing to fly in to attend the courses.

Having said that, if you think there are great software tools out there that can make online learning fun and effective, I would very much want to hear and learn about them. Thanks!
