Changes to Course Duration and Content

MOB104 - Writing Cross Platform iOS and Android Apps using Xamarin.Forms and C#

MOB104 is now a 2-day course. Due to the focus of Microsoft on the cross-platform developers' tools, Xamarin.Forms is now more important than ever. In this course, you will learn how to develop cross-platform mobile apps for Android and iOS, as well as learn some advanced techniques like:

• Cross-platform User Interface
• Dependency Injection
• MVVM Architecture

IOS302 - Advanced iOS - Apple Watch Programming

With the latest watchOS from Apple, the Apple Watch is now a much more compelling wearable device. Apps now launch quicker, and battery life is much improved on the new Apple Watch series 2. We have since revised this course to 2 days, so that we have time to cover all the cool new features in watchOS 3. (Course comes with an Apple Watch Series 2 watch)

IOT201 - Python Programming

IOT201 is now titled "Python Programming". Instead of focusing just on the syntax of Python, we now cover doing interesting things with Python, such as:

• Developing RESTful service using Flask
• Securing your RESTful service using a SSL and Basic Authentication
• Sockets programming using Python
• Push notifications using Python
• Writing your own modules

As such, the IOT201 is now a 2-day course.

WEB109 – 2-Day Programming Intelligent Chatbots using the Microsoft Bot Framework

Imagine you are running the tech support department for your company. Every day, you receive thousands of calls from users asking questions about the products your company sell. A lot of these questions are similar, and you spend a significant part of your day explaining the same things over and over again. And you thought – there must be an easier way to be more productive about this. You could create a software (a bot) that automatically understands the question the user asked. For example, if the user asks: “How do I restart the device?”, the software could automatically reply: “Press and hold the button located at the back of the device for 5 seconds”. And to make it even more useful, your software could automatically reply to the customers’ questions through emails, Skype, Whatsapp, etc.

Well, you could build this software today. And this is what the Microsoft Bot Framework is all about. In this 2-day course, you will learn about the Microsoft Bot Framework, and use it to build useful bots that understand natural language, and integrate them with your favorite client applications.

While Microsoft may not be winning the smartphone platform war today, it is slowly making inroads into the various markets previously dominated by iPhone and Android. Today's biggest news - Russia's largest wireless carrier has just dropped support for iPhone in favor of Windows Phone.

Confirmed Windows Phone 8 Programming Courses This Month

In July, we have two confirmed courses for Windows Phone 8 development - Foundation of Windows Phone 8 Programming, and Advanced Windows Phone 8 Programming. In Sep, we have a brand new course on Windows Phone 8 NFC Programming. So, brush the dust off your Windows laptop and start your engine! 

In the Foundation course, you will learn the basics of writing Windows Phone app - User Interfaces, choosers and launchers, states of an application, location-based services, file storage, web services, databases, maps, and more. 

In the Advanced course, you will dive deeper into the more advanced areas of Windows Phone programming - background agents, Bluetooth and sockets programming, security, push notifications, and more.

Windows Phone Challenge - Lumia 920 and Lumia 925

Microsoft Singapore and Nokia Singapore are teaming up for the next Windows Phone Challenge! All you need to do is to implement one (or more) of the challenges posted here and you will be able to win some cool Nokia Lumia devices. The challenges are applications based very much on the local (Singapore) context. This is a great idea for student projects and is a good time to put your knowledge to the test.
